Congratulations to Sheila O'Donnell on her election to Aosdána. Hard luck to her creative and business partner John Tuomey for not. I checked the Aosdána website to clarify whether he is an existing member... he isn’t.

How can Aosdána elect one member of a creative duo to its body, and not the other?

RIBA famously awarded their Gold Medal to Robert Venturi in the late 1980s.

Mr. Venturi was embarrassed that the RIBA had omitted his creative partner, Denise Scott Brown from the citation. Mr. Venturi believed "Venturi Scott Brown" to be a single creative entity and was unhappy that RIBA had created and artificial distinction.

To put it another way, if Rogers and Hammerstein write music and lyrics together, can you award a Tony to one of them only? This is not a searing controversy, but it is worth pointing out because one partner’s contribution has been acknowledged and the other’s has not.

Is this reasonable ...... or even fair?
Food for thought.

Sincerely, John P. Kearney
