WAF (World Architecture Festival) 30 seconds with…….

Michael Heenan, a principal at Allen Jack + Cottier Architects (AJ+C) in Sydney, which also has 100 architects in offices across South East Asia, will join the architectural elite as a judge at the World Architecture Festival (WAF) Awards 2010.

Michael’s role at AJ+C has helped the practice become one of the most recognised in Australia. His participation has resulted in the practice winning international design competitions and numerous awards, including the Best Sports Building at WAF 2009.

After exhibiting at the Venice Architecture Biennale in 2009, Michael became the Chair of the Australian Institute of Architects Awards for Excellence Jury in 2010, making him well placed to judge one of the largest architectural awards programme in the world.

Occupation:

Principal, Allen Jack+Cottier Architects

Currently working on:

New cities in China and Vietnam, indoor and outdoor sports stadiums, university designs, inner city schools in Sydney and China.

I knew I had to pursue a career in architecture when:

I first saw the light washing the concrete on Tadao Ando’s Mount Rokko chapel in Kobe

Nicest thing anyone's ever said to me:

“Michael’s project is a very complete piece, where every design decision that is made seems to be inevitable. It may be a relatively minor project but actually, it is probably a relatively minor project of a lifetime” – Paul Finch, WAF Program Director, on Berry Sports Hall

Worst thing anyone's ever said to me:

You don’t look like an architect! A new client (worst + best)

Proudest architectural moment:

Winning in Barcelona

Favourite world building:

Mount Rokko Chapel by Tadao Ando

Architect/Practice to watch and why:

Qingyun Ma of MADA s.p.a.m. for urban design, Anton Garcia-Abril for the powerful use of raw materials and light and Peter Stutchbury in Australia

Most exciting region for architecture today:

South East Asia, especially China

Favourite thing about WAF:

The opportunity to view the very latest, sometimes not yet published works shown live by the design architects who are then available to meet and discuss their work during the whole conference.
