Garden City

On a corner site in the green and pleasant suburb of Killester, North Dublin sit two large, white-to-grey rectangular forms which make up Donal Hickey and Fionuala Lennon's family house and office "compound". Hickey is an architect and the author of this exciting new development while Lennon is an interior designer and undoubtedly the project's co-pilot. The two have been happy collaborators since they purchased the plot - a slice of someone else's garden - over seven years ago in 2000. During this period, they have drafted and crafted, prevailed over planning obstacles and even become parents into the bargain, until they arrived at this handsome bespoke family home and workspace.

In the neighbourhood of pitched-roof terraced houses - formerly an Irish Sailors' and Soldiers' Land Trust Estate providing lowdensity housing amidst allotments to former service-men during the 1920s and 30s - Hickey's design presents a marked contrast and immediately differentiates itself. Its external character is defined by the sharp and clean contours of flat roofs and rendered walls, which are broken at the building's main fronts by expanses of glazing set into iroko-wood frames.
