Brief
The clients' main home is a well-known country estate which they painstakingly restored over a number of years. The key concept for their new coastal retreat was that it should provide an antithesis to the more traditional and formal lifestyle of their existing home. Although the brief should be wholly modern in architectural expression, our clients were adamant that it should be no less rigorous in its attention to detail.
The driving force in finding a location for this exciting commission was its proximity to the local school attended by their son. Demand for properties on this attractive stretch of the North Down coast has rocketed in recent years. The coastal area is extensive (about 10km) extending to the outskirts of Bangor. Vacant sites do not often come up and therefore the locations considered were all resale properties, which could be replaced with a new-build dwelling.
